Fazenda Agua Limpa Day 16 17.09.2020
We had a delayed start this morning due to trying to organize a few bits for collecting samples from the birds, but whilst Lia was revising protocol and collecting materials I was able to wander down around the lodging and see what was around along the edges of the gallery forest. Although there were not masses of birds a few agitated hummingbirds drew my attention to the canopy where I spotted a smallish raptor perched up. It seemed rather none fussed that I was there and I was able to get some nice photos to inspect the bird. The size gave the impression of possibly a small Accipiter although the plumage perhaps better suited the larger Bicolored Hawk that lives in the farm. I remained puzzled by this bird until I returned from the field when I was able to access the books and found an alternative suggestion with Rufous-thighed Kite. This bird would have been a lifer and is extremely similar to Bicolored Hawk but all the features seemed to indicate the Kite and I was happy that this was the species involved, but we confirmed in the evening with a friend of Lia’s. It has been a while since my last lifer so this was certainly a nice treat. Also round the farm was a Green-barred Woodpecker which was a new species for me in the farm.
The mornings ringing was fairly good, with a few new Helmeted Manakins and a smart Southern Antpipit and Green-winged Saltator. After lunch I visited the reservoir and the Cerrado, but both were quiet with little to report. In the evening the Nacunda Nighthawks performed nicely once again although the numbers seem to be lower than the first nights that we watched them.

Fazenda Agua Limpa Day 17 18.09.2020
Today returned to the cloudy conditions of a few days ago and with it came the humidity for the first real time during my visit. It’s a sign that soon there will be rainfall to hopefully quell the excess dust and bring and end to the fires across South America. Birding wise it did not make so much difference to us. Early in the morning I checked the road down from our lodging but there was not so much going on and that was the case for the ringing that we did, with very little in the way of bycatch but still three Helmeted Manakins was a good return for an area we have already been ringing in for two days prior.
In the afternoon we caught a Variable Antshrike on the river just down from the lodging, for a control species for Lia’s project. The bird has a nest there so our work was rapid and the bird quickly returned, hence no photos of what is a stunning species in the hand. After this Lia and I went for a walk around the farm. There were a few nice bits, with the Yellowish Pipit again showing nicely in the evening light, and two Variable Orioles also showing very nicely. There appeared to have been something of an emergence of termites which had spawned a frenzy of activity from the Least Nighthawks and local Hirundine species, and even an Aplomado Falcon was getting in on the act.

Fazenda Agua Limpa Day 18 19.09.2020
It was another hot and humid day with extended cloud cover during the afternoon. At times the conditions were extremely unpleasant, especially when I visited the reservoir in the afternoon. During the morning however they were not particularly unpleasant, and we enjoyed a nice visit to Cerrado. We wanted to catch a Collared Crescentchest, because they’re beautiful, but the bird bounced out of the net. Whilst up there we also had a smart pair of White-rumped Tanagers, so it was a pretty sweet morning overall.
Once we had entered the gallery forest, we set up nets along one of the forest rivers to hopefully catch more Helmeted Manakins but they did not play ball and in the end we caught none. There were a few birds moving around the river however and we did get a smart molting juvenile male Swallow Tanager and a Pale-bellied Tyrant-Manakin, the latter being a species I rarely see out of the nets. There was nothing particularly notable in the forest but there was a pair of Rufous-tailed Jacamars displaying and flycatching, so that was fun to watch.
In the afternoon, as mentioned, I headed to the reservoir but the humid conditions made birding a challenge. Many birds appeared lethargic and some were panting. The reservoir was flat calm and there was a lot of activity from Hirundines throwing themselves at the water for insects. The birding highlight was a total of four Scaled Pigeons perched distantly on the fringes of the gallery forest. The Nacunda Nighthawk roost was bitterly disappointing with only a single bird passing over, perhaps the change in conditions has prompted a change in their behavior.
