The Bwindi
National Park is most well known for its Gorilla population, but we only had
one day in this lowland area of the park before moving up to the high altitudes. We spent the day birding as there are good numbers of rare and endemic birds in this lowland
area so to try and maximise our chances of seeing as many of them as we could, we hired a guide for the day.
The track through the forest was long and linear, walking roughly 6 kilometers
into the forest before walking back. In the end we saw many of the areas specialties
including Neumanns Warbler, Pink-footed Puffback and Equatorial Akalat, but it
was here that I saw my most wanted species for the trip; Black-faced Prinia, an
IOC split from Banded Prinia…
Our guide knew a location where we could find the bird, or so he said, but as the day wore on it looked like he had forgotten. However it was not so, and by early afternoon we were at the spot and enjoying fantastic views of the bird as it moved through the undergrowth. It was often reluctant to show in the open, which was frustrating, but on the occasions when it did we were able to get some photos. After such a successful day in the National Park we decided that it would not be worth paying the entry fee for a second day and as such we would move on with our trip and head to the higher elevations first thing in the morning.
