We had one final morning in Thailand before we needed to head off to the airport, and we had selected a hotel near to the Khok Kham salt plans just outside of Bangkok, to offer us another chance to see the Spoon-billed Sandpiper, on the off chance we might have dipped it in Pak Thale. Fortunately we did not miss out on the bird there, but we were still excited to see it again, hopefully a bit close than we had seen it before.
In the end we spent about
an hour and a half birding the pans, and in that time we did indeed manage to
see a Spoon-billed Sandpiper, with one just two pans over but seemingly a bit
close than it had been at Pak Thale. Through the scope we got excellent views
of the bird as it fed, and chased around by the Red-necked Stints. Other waders
present were all common species, but a distant Osprey was a trip tick, the
final one we would get.
We set off to the airport
at 10:30 and arrived around midday, giving us plenty of time to organise
ourselves and for me to prepare for the next phase of this extended adventure…
