Fazenda Agua Limpa Day 34 05.10.2020
Today was a really pleasant days birding out in the farm, but somehow I failed to take any photos and in the end was playbacking the very common Plain-crested Elaenia in order to have photographed something today. However we still saw some really good birds and especially the morning was extremely productive. We first went up the where I had seen the Ash-throated Crake, to show Lia the bird. It showed nicely but frustratingly brief meaning I could not manage to get a photo of the bird. Still, it was good to see it again. The reservoir was fairly quiet, as was the forest, but there was a good selection of common species that made the day very pleasant. In the afternoon I headed back to the Eucalyptus plantations that I had visited the previous day, but it was not as productive as the previous day, hence why I resorted to photographing Elaenias.

Fazenda Agua Limpa Day 35 06.10.2020
We set off
early morning to the Cerrado to see if we could finally catch ourselves a
Collared Crescentchest. And we did, but it was still a challenge. At first,
even thought the net was placed on the ground to stop it happening, the bird
somehow crawled under the net, and then when it finally did go in, it just
wriggled along and had Lia not run to the net to catch it, the bird would have
undoubtedly escaped for the THIRD time. But still, it did not, and as such we
were able to admire this stunning Cerrado species up close. What an absolute
beauty.
After that we headed down to the Gallery Forest to try and catch a Manakin, but despite our best efforts he did not go in the net and it turned into something of a featureless morning. In the afternoon I headed back out to visit another area of Gallery Forest at the far side of the farm. While there was a good array of commoner species, there were also a couple of more interesting birds. I refound the Chestnut-vented Conebill that I had found in this are before, although this time there was a pair, and then I got a patch tick with Mouse-coloured Tyrannulet. This latter species I have only seen once before, so it was nice to catch up with one again.

Fazenda Agua Limpa Day 36 07.10.2020
We awoke
early again to head to the field but through a series of mishaps we ended up
basically following our usual routine. The reservoir was fairly quiet again,
but with another notable drop in the water level leaving more shoreline for
potential waders, but sadly no actual waders. We then headed off to try and catch
and catch some Helmeted Manakins but once again they proved difficult and
elusive, and we failed. As such we set up some fresh nets in a new area and
then called it a day. Today and the next few days are undergoing something of a
heatwave, with temperatures to peak around 40 degrees.
In the afternoon, once it had cooled off somewhat, I went for a short walk around the farm. There was nothing too different, although a pair of Yellow-browed Tyrants were nice. Otherwise it was the usual assortment of commoner farmland species, but enough to boost the day list at any rate. After dark we embarked on a night drive to try and locate some Owls or Nightjars. On the former we were quite unsuccessful with a distant heard only Mottled Owl and another unidentified large owl all we had to show for it. Nightjars produced nothing different but we enjoyed an insane Scissor-tailed Nightjar displaying around the car. Sadly it did not stop for photos but it was fantastic to see the bird and hear the sound of the tail feathers rattling. We also stopped off at a small pond I knew of and here we found a stunning tree frog, Northern Orange-legged Leaf Frog Pithecopus hypochondrialis, one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. We also picked out the Maned Wolf hunting the fields, but it was distant but certainly not bothered by us. Certainly not a wasted evening at any rate.
