In the morning we set off before first light and began birding along the trails that cut into the Atlantic Forest near the lodging. The birding was brilliant with good numbers of species in a lively forest environment. There were two new birds for me here, the first being Pale-browed Treehunter which we got good but brief views of as part of a mixed flock. The bird was calling frequently and came down to our playback but spent most of its time on the wrong side of a large palm leaf, only showing itself clearly once. The other was Solitary Tinamou! This large, elusive bird took some finding after we heard it call, but with some perseverance we managed to get brilliant views of the bird perched in the gloomy understory.
Once we finished the trail and had breakfast we made our way slowly back, birding along the road. Although Black-headed Berryeater was our main target we could not find one despite hearing at least three different individuals. We did get fantastic views of Spotted Bamboowren, however, as well as stumbling across a flock of Spot-winged Wood-Quail. A mixed flock that passed by also had some very showy Oustalet’s Tyrannulets in it, which we enjoyed a lot. This all in spite of the fact that it was already mid-morning and the birding had slowed down considerably. The fact that we missed some of the species we wanted only gives us another reason to go back to this fantastic area of forest.
