Peru Day 17; Hacienda Amorique

We only had time for a morning birding at Hacienda Amorique before we continued on our travels with a substantial six-hour drive back into the high Andes. We decided to bird the lower forest near the lodge to try and clean up on the few birds we had outstanding and to pick up on some other new species for our trip list. In general the birding was not as lively as the top of the site, with no flocks encountered at all, but there was still a good selection of species on offer, and a few new birds and trip ticks thrown in for good measure.

In total I managed four new birds during the morning; Ocellated Woodcreeper, Olive-faced Flycatcher, Yellow-breasted Warbling Antbird and the delightfully small White-bellied Pygmy Tyrant. While these were all nice to see, it was the other birds that were the highlights, with brilliant views of Scaly-breasted Wren and singing Blue-crowned Trogon, as well as another great performance from White-browed Antbird.

The bird of the morning however was Black-faced Antthrush. Having heard one calling, it would not come out at all, and in the end I had to scramble through the vegetation in order to try to see the bird. Even then it seemed reluctant to approach, until finally the sound of its song started to get nearer, before the bird itself appeared between the sticks, walking along the floor. It didn’t stick around long though, and after it walked across another open area, it disappeared back into the understory.

At 11:00 we said goodbye to Hacienda Amorique and set off back into the Altiplano. The plan was to get as far as we could, so as to be in the best position to try for Rufous-backed Inca Finch in the morning. We ended up at a town called Huariaca, just 45 minutes from our intended morning destination, having driven over five hours from the Hacienda. The only note from the drive was the appearance of Vicunias on the high altiplano near Junin. Although we had driven this exact road before, there had been no sign, so to see so many was very welcome indeed.
