Peru Day 24; Laguna Contaycocha & Laguna Conococha

Today was ultimately a write-off, with over ten hours of driving planned as we moved from our base of Huanuco and moved to the town of Yunguy in the state of Ancash, adjacent to the Huascaran National Park. This would see us complete our Andean birding before we descended down to the coastal plain in order to round off our trip.

However, a few well-timed stops did produce a few birds. A small lake we passed at the border between the states of Huanuco and Ancash produced a few waterbirds, including a Plumbeous Rail, but also one of our key targets for the next few days with Rufous-eared Brushfinch. A subsequent lakeside stop near the town of Conococha also had a few waterbirds, including many Chilean Flamingos and Giant Coots, as well as multiple species of common wildfowl. Roadside stops produced both a nice and confiding Andean Tinamou and a Rufous-webbed Bush-Tyrant.

We finally arrived in Yunguy at 07:15, having set off in the morning at 05:30. After such a long drive we had a brief dinner and plan for the next day, before we crashed out. The only consolation for the long hours, was the outstanding scenery. We passed through some of the best scenery of the entire trip, which really is saying something. The Andes at their absolute best!
