Brazil; Parque Linear Nove de Julho

We had a few sites that we wanted to visit during Lias work in Sao Paulo and this was another. Although situated in central Sao Paulo, the small park bordering a large reservoir provides one of the best places in Brazil to get to grips with Great Grebe, a species more commonly found in the southern cone of South America. Despite the level of urbanization around the lake, and insane volumes of litter, the population here is thriving and expanding. We saw 21 Grebes just in the small section of the lake that we visited, including a female on a nest.
In addition to the Grebe, there was also a Red-fronted Coot seen in the park during December. This is a rare vagrant to Sao Paulo from southern Brazil and Argentina so we were pretty thrilled when we were able to find the bird showing very nicely. Both the Grebe and the Coot were lifers for Lia and myself.
There were a few other interesting birds on offer here, including a nice assortment of ducks; Silver Teal, White-cheeked Pintail and all three Whistling-Duck species. Another Brazil tick for me was a Peregrine that came bombing through hunting for Wildfowl. It certainly gave the teals and lapwings a fright before it moved off. A pleasant mornings birding, despite the huge amount of garbage and dull conditions.
