Our final morning in Canada was spent hunting around Old Cut
looking for Turkeys. Sadly after an hour driving scanning fields we failed to
find any, so we returned to Old Cut to see how the mornings ringing was going.
Sadly it was a fairly slow morning but a female Blue-winged Warbler was an
obvious highlight, as well as Ovenbird and Northern Waterthrush, although I
ringed no birds.
At 9.00 we left Long Point and headed back to the site for
Louisiana Waterthrush for one final ditch attempt to see this species. Sadly
though the birding remained difficult and we were unable to find any
Waterthrush. However, all was not lost as we did find ourselves a Turkey, which
was some compensation, and made the walk through the mosquito ridden woodland
worthwhile.
Highlights
Wild Turkey - Although
we dipped during our designated Turkey search, we came up lucky with this large
bird on our search for Waterthrush. It appeared to be drinking from the brook,
but scampered off as soon as it saw it. The bird appeared so large that my
initial impression from the angle I got was of a deer, although only for a few
fleeting seconds. What a beast of a bird. We later saw a second individual on
our drive back.
Hooded Warbler -
After only seeing a single first year female until this point, it was nice to
have a showy male hopping around the fallen branches near the brook. It was not
shy, and we got a really good look at it before its foraging took it out of
sight for us.
