Long Point; The Tip

Northerly winds dominated the day, bringing with it cold conditions and a restriction on which nets we could open. As a result our catch rate was pretty low, with nothing out of the ordinary. The same could be said for our afternoon sub-census walk, which produced very little out of the ordinary. We did get two new warblers today; Northern Waterthrush and Northern Parula, and we reopened the nets in the afternoon in an attempt to capture the latter. Sadly though it came to nothing but despair…

Highlights

Northern Waterthrush - This was a species that we really wanted to see, so when one was seen running along the water’s edge by net MX01 we were very excited. We made numerous moves to catch it before we were successful, only to find that it was a bird from the previous day that had already been ringed.

Northern Parula - Our attempts to catch our second warbler lifer of the day were much less successful. Our ‘carrot and stick’ method of using a tape whilst simultaneous pushing the bird towards the net, proved very successful, with the bird very quickly going into the net. Somehow though, it then very quickly worked its way out, by somehow going through. We had no idea how, as there was no hole there, but it somehow managed it.
