Our final stop before returning to Maceio was not a birding stop, but instead a visit to a Manatee reintroduction point in the north of Alagoas, where a small population of 45 individuals is freely roaming a mangrove inlet.
Initially, it looked like it would be a disappointing morning,
where the boat took us only to some of the pens where the Manatees injured by motorboats
outside of the mangrove were being rehabilitated, but fortunately, while we were
watching one of the free-swimming individuals swum up to investigate us, and we
were able to watch it swimming next to the road, so close we could touch it.
Despite not being a truly wild animal, it was still amazing to see.
And our visit coincided with feeding time for the individuals
in rehabilitation, so we were able to watch one of the injured animals enjoy a
feast of vegetables, so that was pretty awesome as well. On the whole, it was
certainly worth doing, despite not involving any truly naturalised individuals.
