Brazil; Serra do Ouro

Before our arrival in the area we had contacted a local guide, Matheus, about hiring him for at least one day guiding. We had a few birds to ask about, and as a joke we mentioned Boa Nova Tapaculo, a bird that is hardly ever seen. He told us he had heard the bird just a couple of weeks earlier in a more remote area of forest than Boa Nova itself, so we were quite excited and hired him to track it down. Even with his help, we were not able to find the bird, and we did not even hear it.

That is not to say that we did not have an absolutely phenomenal days birding in the forest known as Serra do Ouro. It took some effort to get there, as our small car struggled up some of the wet dirt roads, and required a physical push to make it. It was then a substantial walk to the forest, through an area of grazing. Yet even here there were some new birds for me; Dubois Seedeater and Swallow-winged Puffbird both showing Ok, but the seedeater was too brief for me to manage a photo.

Once we entered the forest it was very lively. There was just one more new bird for me here, the Golden-rumped Euphonia which was difficult to follow in the canopy but eventually tracked down a female that showed somewhat Ok. But it was not the new birds that really made the birding special, it was all the other species that we found. We had really nice views of what was just my second Bahia Tyrannulet, an endangered and range-restricted species. In the open areas of bracken there were good views to be had of Shear-tailed Grey-Tyrant, just my second time, and at one point there were four King Vulture in the air all together. Inside the forest we had a brilliant view of White-bibbed Antbird near the path, and as we were leaving the site in the evening we had a nice Buff-throated Purpletuft that showed very nicely in the evening light.
