Having completed our work early we had a full day to bird
around Salvador. The obvious choice target was the fringe-backed fire-eye, and
endangered species only found in Salvador. We visited the best hotspot we could
find for the species and spent almost the whole day there, but sadly we could
not produce the goods.
We did managed a number of other rare birds, and I managed
six new species. It’s hard to pick out a highlight from our seven hours of
birding, but a lek of Red-headed Manakins or seeing Eared Pygmy-Tyrant were the
two standouts. The manakins especially were fantastic, flashing their wings and
shaking their tails in contest with each other. My other new species were the
IUCN vulnerable Bahia Antwren, Sooretama Antshrike, Blue-backed Manakin and
Yellow-backed Tanager. All showed nicely but photography was difficult in the
low light of the forest. I also stumbled across the largest toad I have ever seen. It was enormous, so big that it didn't even move as I prodded it with my foot.

Brazil Day 33 06.07.2019
Today would mostly be spent on logistics and travelling from
Salvador to Vitoria, where we would spend the next week at an academic
conference. Whilst this did mean that there was not much time for birding, we managed
to sneak in about half an hour whilst we were getting our work truck washed
prior to its return to the rental. In this time we wandered around the nearby
beach hoping for some seabirds. And whilst there were not any, it was nice to
see Tropical Mockingbird again, this
time to get some photos.
