Day 68 15.04.2018
In a desperate attempt to catch white-cheeked tern before I
left I headed out with Re’a on a marine pelagic survey. Sadly the attempt
failed and it will be a species that I miss. The birdlife total was fairly low
but there was a nice variety with a number of new species for my trip; Sooty
Shearwater, Long-tailed and Pomarine Skua and Little Tern. The Pom especially
flew by nice and close so that we got excellent views through bins. We also had
a Collard Pratincole fly past us, which was pretty awesome. Sadly the afternoon
was spent packing and clearing the room ready for departure. Sadly that is my
time in Israel all wrapped up, just one more day to go…
-Pomarine Skua

Day 69 16.04.2018
My last day in Israel would be largely spent travelling. The
morning drive from Be’ora, where we spent the night, with Noam was fairly
productive with Chukar, Ortolan Bunting and Wild Ass all seen even before we
arrived in Tel Aviv. Once we were in the general Tel Aviv area we were treated
to two different Black-winged Kites sat on the roadside.
The mornings birding would take place in HaYarkon Park where
I spent my first day. Once again I somehow missed the parks resident
vineous-breasted starlings but there were still plenty of other escaped species
to look at; Monk Parakeet, Ring-necked Parakeet, Common Myna and Egyptian
Geese. Goldfinch and Eurasian Jay of the black-headed variety were both new for
the trip bringing me up to the nice round figure of 250 species for the whole
trip. In addition to the birds there was also Violet Dropwing and Banded
Groundling dragonfly. It’s just a shame I only had an hour in the park, as
there was so much more to explore.
